With 2015 budgeting looming on the horizon, it’s time to take your expense management to the maximum. What did you spend in Quarters 1-3? Which cost centers monopolized your telecom budget, and which devices went unused?
Speaking the TEM Language
At first glance telecom expense management (TEM) can seem like an absolute alphabet soup of acronyms and industry terms. One of the first steps to becoming a telecom expense management (TEM) expert, is being able to talk the talk.
Finding Your TEM Solution: To the cloud!
It seems we’ve all moved to the cloud in the last 5 years. Whether it’s servers, data storage, software… you name it – we’ve put it up there. We’re all floating on cloud 9 with the functionality of cloud computing, but what exactly does it mean?
Hospitality: Telecom Case Study
With 23 years of TEM know-how under our belts, we have racked up a success story or two. Sometimes it takes seeing a story to really understand exactly what we do for our clients. The following is an outline of a case study where, when faced with a $15M over expenditure, this hospitality client decided it was time to control their WAN inventory and costs.
Finding Your TEM Solution: One Size Does Not Fit All
Whether it’s something as simple as a baseball cap, or as complex as telecom expense management software – the truth is that ‘One Size’ often does not fit all.
Telecom Contract Negotiation: Talk softly but carry a big stick
A webinar we did not that long ago illustrates the main problem with telecom contract management and telecom contract negotiation. We asked how many attending firms went through the RFP and negotiation process when their telecom contracts were due for renewal. The answers were all over the board. However, only ONE said they did it “Every time”. I think we had one “Often”, but most said “Sometimes” or “Rarely”.
What goes into a wireless audit?
There are several excellent ways firms can save on their wireless expenses by contracting a wireless expense management firm or consultant to audit their environment. Valicom offers wireless mobility audits, in addition to our wireline services.
Wireless Optimization: Why It Matters
With the expanding complexity of telecom, there is an ever growing push to integrate cost allocation into expense management. Managers want to know who pays for telecom services and how much they pay, so that they can make intelligent decisions. IT and finance both want deeper visibility into what is driving costs, and hopefully, insight as to how the environment can be restructured to minimize the impact to the bottom line.
Wireless Data Pooling Demands Strong Mobile Optimization
Is your firm eager to explore Mobile Data Pooling? Well, a word of caution before you make the plunge. As they say, “You can’t manage what you can’t measure”, and many firms are finding that they don’t have reliable data on what their current wireless plans cost, let alone the assurance that they have optimized as much as possible.

Why Telecom Contract Negotiation Matters
A telecom contract controls not only price, but terms and conditions, over a long period of time. Long distance rates, mobile data and minute pooling options, internet package pricing and device purchase costs all affect the bottom line. This means that getting the lowest cost, most flexible agreement possible is one of the very best ways to save money on telecom.

Wireline Telecom Invoice Auditing Tips
This is where the rubber meets the road. Old school landline telecom invoice auditing. Every piece of paper that comes into your office from a carrier is a place to save money. Incorrect charges, setup fees you were never supposed to pay, items not billing to contract terms – there are a lot of reasons you are paying too much for your telecom services.
Telecom Invoice Auditing
Telecom invoice auditing has always been the cornerstone of a strong TEM program. It is the first thing that comes to mind to control telecom and mobile costs, though it is far from universally implemented. Many firms simply receive invoices, verify they are within a tolerable range of variance, and pay them. This is an expensive oversight – analyst research confirms that up to 15% of telecom invoices have errors. Not having a dedicated person or team to review invoices monthly for problems can create a big leak in the telecom budget. A leak you can plug.
BYOD or not to BYOD
Valicom has posted their first SlideShare! The below SlideShare talks about the increasing trend of BYOD. Is it cost effective? Is it security safe? Are there legal and non-compliance issues? These are all important things to think about when implementing BYOD as part of your business. While this SlideShare points out problems created by BYOD, it also discusses alternative solutions that would steer you in direction that best fits your business needs.
Better Telecom Cost Allocation = More Accountability + Reduced Expenses
Often in organizations, telecommunications expenses are allocated at too high of a level, without regard for the type of usage or the purpose of the service. This kind of high level accounting can short-circuit existing internal incentives that are designed to reduce expenses.
